DeleteMe Spokeo Opt-Out Review

Spokeo collects all kinds of personal information and posts it publicly online.  Luckily, opting-out of Spokeo only requires you to fill out an opt-out form and verify your email address.  Your listing should be removed within 72 hours.

What is Spokeo?

Spokeo is a people-search site that aggregates personal information found online, and complies it into an easy-to-find profile.  Spokeo has 18 million monthly visitors, which means that if your information is on there, it’s likely that somebody has already seen it.  Spokeo claims to help reunite lost friends and family or uncover scammers (they even have customer “success stories”), but they are really just another data broker.

Spokeo has your personal information

Spokeo pulls information together from sources like the phone book, the U.S. Census, and social media websites, then, indexes it – making it easy to find information about pretty much anyone with a simple Google search.  This is a sample search result of what you might find when you Google somebody’s name:

As you can see, they advertise having the phone number address, and email.  This is the kind of information that people seek when they are looking for someone to scam or take advantage of.

Here is a sample Spokeo report:

Typically, Spokeo will have your name, address, age, phone number, email, birthday, a list of relatives, even a map to your house and your photo!  This kind of information makes it easy for somebody to steal your identity, phish for your credit card information, or even stalk you.  Furthermore, because your relatives’ names are listed, they are also at risk.  The easiest way to protect yourself is to have your information removed from the site.

How to Opt-Out of Spokeo: Step-by-Step

Luckily, I was already removed from the site thanks to DeleteMe.  So, I removed one of my family member’s profiles for this opt-out blog.

  1. Search for your listing on spokeo.com.

Final Steps

Although your listing will be removed from Spokeo within a few days, it may pop up again as they continue to crawl the web and aggregate personal information.  For that reason, it’s a good idea to check up on your listing and make sure it hasn’t resurfaced.

Also, removing your listing on Spokeo doesn’t remove it from other data broker sites, like Whitepages or MyLife.  You can refer to our DIY Opt-Out Guide to manually remove yourself individually from each of these sites, or you can save yourself a lot of time by using Abine’s DeleteMe service.  DeleteMe periodically crawls the web and removes you from data broker sites, so you don’t have to go and figure out where you’re listed, how to opt-out, and keep checking whether your information has reappeared.
