What Is the Do Not Call List North Carolina?

It doesn’t exist anymore. 

Rather than keep the Do Not Call Registry North Carolina, the state has adopted the national Do Not Call List. 

Per the ‘Do Not Call’ page on the NC DOJ website, “North Carolina will not maintain its own state specific list since the national list can serve that role.” 

North Carolina residents who want to get fewer unsolicited telemarketing calls should sign up for the national DNC List. 

Both cell phone and home numbers can be registered on the list. On the other hand, business numbers are not allowed. 

According to the website, having just one list is “simpler for consumers, more efficient for businesses and saves the state money in tough fiscal times.” 

Once your name is on the DNC List, telemarketers are legally required to cease contacting you within 31 days (though there are some exceptions – see the section below).

Unless your phone is disconnected or you remove it from the DNC List yourself, you won’t ever have to reregister – your number will stay on the DNC List indefinitely. 

Exceptions 

The DNC List exempts the following calls: 

• Political calls
• Charitable calls
• Survey calls
• Debt collection calls
• Informational calls
• Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
• Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.

North Carolina Do Not Call List Registration

Instead of maintaining a North Carolina Do Not Call Registry, the state relies on the national DNC List.

What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls 

Unfortunately, signing up for the national DNC List will only reduce legitimate telemarketing calls. 

Scammers will more than likely continue to try to get in touch with you. 

To reduce how many scam calls you receive, you need to remove your contact details from online sources. This includes places where you might have published your phone information yourself, like social media sites as well as data brokers. 

Data brokers are companies who scrape your personal data, including your phone number, from various sources, collate it all together, and share it online for anyone to see.

The vast majority of data brokers have an “opt-out” option, meaning you can remove your profile from their databases.
