Below, we explain whether Flexjobs is a scam and discuss some steps you can take to improve your safety when using this platform. 

What Is Flexjobs?

Flexjobs is a platform for finding remote and hybrid jobs.

According to Flexjobs, what sets them apart from other job boards online is that there are no scams or junk job postings on their website. They say they have a team that spends more than 200 hours daily verifying every job and writing company descriptions. 

Flexjobs is not free. You have to pay a monthly subscription fee to use it. 

Is Flexjobs a Scam?

No, Flexjobs is not a scam. 

It’s a legitimate subscription-based platform for finding remote and hybrid jobs. 

Flexjobs has been positively reviewed by sites like Side Hustle Nation, which gave it a rating of 4.6 out of 5.0 stars, and Dollar Sprout, which gave it a rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. 

Flexjobs gets positive reviews from users:

  • 4.3 out of 5.0 stars (from 4,293 reviews) on Trustpilot.
  • 4.6 out of 5.0 stars (from 14,377 ratings) on Sitejabber.
  • 4.5 out of 5.0 stars (from 3 reviews) on G2

User reviews on online forums like Reddit are somewhat more negative.

Though Flexjobs says that its team spends hundreds of hours every day checking that the jobs they post are real, several Reddit users say the platform is full of fake job postings.

That said, some users say they found jobs they’ve ended up working at for years through Flexjobs.

One of the main cons of Flexjobs, pointed out by users and third-party review sites, is that not all jobs listed are unique. 

This means you can probably find most of the jobs on the Flexjobs site through other sources without paying a subscription fee. 

Of course, the advantage of Flexjobs is that you don’t need to look through numerous sources to find jobs in your field – they’re already collated for you. 

Satisfaction Guarantee 

Flexjobs offers a Satisfaction Guarantee. Basically, if you’re not happy with the service for whatever reason, you can cancel your subscription and get a refund within 14 days of creating or renewing your Flexjobs account. 

Security 

We couldn’t find a lot of information about the security measures Flexjobs has implemented on its platform.

In its privacy policy, Flexjobs says it maintains “appropriate technical, physical, and administrative security measures” to protect user information, but does not specify what these measures are.

Flexjobs details the kind of data it collects, why, and with whom it shares it in its privacy policy.

Flexjobs collects the following information about you:

  • Username.
  • Email address.
  • Payment information, e.g., credit/debit card information, name, and billing address. 
  • Data you provide voluntarily, e.g., name, surname, contact details, and information you enter on the site (like employment status and education).
  • Third-party log-in information. 
  • Site interaction data, e.g., content you view and ads you click on. 
  • Mobile device information (e.g., unique device identifiers, device’s operating system, location, mobile number, and text messages). 
  • Browser information. 

Flexjobs says it can combine the information it collects with publicly available information (provided it’s permissible by the law of the country you reside in). 

If you don’t create a Flexjobs account, it can collect the following information about you:

  • Device information.
  • Geolocation data. 
  • Behavioural data.
  • Target job.
  • User content.
  • Target profile.
  • IP address. 
  • First and last name.
  • Geolocation.
  • Postal address.
  • Email address.
  • Phone number.
  • Job title.
  • Areas of interest.
  • Reasons for interest in Flexjobs. 
  • Relationship between you and Flexjobs.
  • Publicly available information retrieved for your social media accounts, if you provide Flexjobs with your social media details. 
  • How you interact with Flexjobs (e.g., pages clicked, time spent on the website, etc.)
  • Information about your computer (e.g., browser type and operating system). 

Flexjobs can use your information to provide you with its services, for personalization purposes, legal and security reasons, marketing and communications, and analysis and reporting of aggregated data.

It can share your data with affiliates and subsidiaries, service providers, potential employers and job boards, legal and law enforcement, and ad and analytics networks. It can also share it in business transfers. As well as that, it may share aggregated or de-identified data.

Registered users can review and change their information through their profiles.

Users can also:

  • Opt out of promotional messages.
  • Ask Flexjobs to delete their account or certain personal identifiable information collected about you. 
  • Request a copy of the specific pieces of personal identifiable information Flexjobs has collected about you and how they handled your information in the past 12 months. 
  • Opt out of SMS alerts.

If you’re a Flexjobs member, you can save your resume, cover letters, and work samples in Flexjobs’ database. Your profile is not publicly visible on the internet, and only employers who are logged into Flexjobs can view your profile, including your contact details. 

If an employer has already accessed your profile, Flexjobs cannot remove it from that employer’s system. You will need to contact those employers directly to ask them to delete your information. The way those employers handle your data is governed by their own privacy policies, not Flexjobs’.

So, Should You Use Flexjobs?

Depends on your needs, budget, and expectations. 

With Flexjobs, you have to pay a subscription fee to access job listings. If you’re on a tight budget, this may be a downside as there’s no guarantee you’ll get a job. 

However, if you’re looking for a remote or hybrid job and don’t have much time to spend finding job listings, then Flexjobs can be a good option.

If you’re unsure and want to explore the platform without a big commitment, you could try their 14-day trial. 

How to Use Flexjobs Safely

  • Control your Flexjobs profile visibility. You can hide your resume and profile from public view so that only logged-in employers can see them. You can also choose to keep it private and apply to jobs directly instead.
  • Limit personal information. Don’t include sensitive details (like your full address, date of birth, or Social Security number) on your resume or profile.
  • Use a separate email address. Create a separate email for job searching to keep your primary email inbox free of spam. 
  • Create a separate resume. If you plan to upload your resume to Flexjobs, consider making one specifically for the platform that doesn’t have sensitive contact information (including your primary email address) and only includes your general location. Remember: Flexjobs cannot remove your resume and information from any employer’s system after the fact. 
  • Use secure payment methods. If you’re going to get a paid Flexjobs subscription, consider using a credit card (they tend to have better fraud protection than debit cards) or a prepaid card. 
  • Opt out of promotional emails and SMS. This will reduce how much spam you get. 
  • Be careful with job listings. Even though Flexjobs has a team that reportedly researches every job listing, scams can still slip through. Research the employer before you apply for a job or respond to their message. If a potential employer asks you to pay money (e.g., for equipment), it’s likely a scam. 
  • Send Flexjobs a privacy request. You can email Flexjobs at privacy@flexjobs.com to see what data they have about you and request that they delete it.
