What Is the Do Not Call List District of Columbia?

The Do Not Call District of Columbia List doesn’t exist. 

Instead of maintaining its own Do Not Call Register, the state recommends that District of Columbia residents who want to get fewer unsolicited calls and text messages list their home and cell phone numbers on the national Do Not Call List.

Business numbers are exempt from the national DNC List. 

Once your number is on the national DNC List, telemarketers are expected to stop calling/texting you within 31 days. Otherwise, you can file a complaint against them.

That said, certain calls are exempt from the national DNC List. See our ‘Exceptions’ section below to see what these are. 

Numbers placed on the national DNC List don’t expire, i.e., you won’t have to re-register unless you remove your phone number from the list yourself and then want to add it again or if your phone number is disconnected. 

Exceptions 

The below calls are allowed, even if your number is on the national DNC List:

• Political calls
• Charitable calls
• Survey calls
• Debt collection calls
• Informational calls
• Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
• Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.

District of Columbia Do Not Call List Registration 

You can’t register for the Do Not Call Registry District of Columbia because it doesn’t exist.

What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls

Unfortunately, signing up for the national Do Not Call List is not a foolproof solution against unwanted calls.

While most legitimate telemarketers will stop calling/texting you once your number is on the national DNC List, scammers almost certainly won’t. They don’t care about lists like the national DNC List because they’re already breaking the law anyway. 

As long as scammers can get your contact details, they will continue to call/text you.

The only truly effective way to get them to stop is to hide your phone number. 

Most people’s phone numbers are easily findable and accessible through sources like people search sites and data brokers. These companies collect and publish your personal data, including your contact details, on their websites for anyone to see.

To stop your phone number and other personal details from showing up on these sites, you need to “opt out.”

Make sure you re-check these sites occasionally. Even if you opt out, data brokers will relist your personal information, including your phone number, when they come across it again.
