What Is the Do Not Call List Indiana?
The Do Not Call List Indiana is a state-specific registry that lets residents limit the amount of telemarketing calls and texts they receive by adding their home or mobile phone numbers to the Indiana Do Not Call List for free.
While you can add your number at any time, the list is updated at set intervals (on the first of January, April, July, and October). If you register your number after the Indiana Do Not Call List publication date, you’ll need to wait for the next one.
Once a number is added to the Do Not Call Registry Indiana, it remains there permanently unless you request its removal.
If you move, email donotcall@atg.in.gov with all your registered phone numbers and the new address.
While the Do Not Call List Indiana protects residents from sales and marketing calls, certain calls are still permitted.
These include charitable organizations, newspapers, and licensed real estate and insurance agents.
Unlike many other states, Indiana does not permit companies with whom you have an existing business relationship to make telemarketing calls to you unless you’ve given them your permission to do so.
Penalties under the Do Not Call List Indiana
The Attorney General’s Office handles Do Not Call List violations in Indiana. Consumers can file complaints online, and the Attorney General’s office will investigate.
The office will investigate whether the telemarketer violated Do Not Call List Indiana regulations. This might involve reviewing call logs, contacting the company, and other investigative steps.
Violators can face fines of up to $10,000 for the first violation and up to $25,000 for each subsequent violation. Indiana law allows the state to seek injunctive relief and other remedies.
In addition to fines, the Indiana Attorney General’s Office may seek an injunction to prevent the company from continuing its illegal telemarketing activities. In some cases, the state may also seek restitution for consumers affected by the violation.

What Is the National Do Not Call List?
In addition to adding your phone number to the Do Not Call Indiana List, it’s also a good idea to register with the National Do Not Call Registry.
The two are separate lists.
The National Do Not Call Registry, overseen by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), is a tool that helps consumers across the U.S. block most telemarketing calls.
By signing up, you can theoretically reduce the number of unsolicited sales calls you get.
Once your number is registered, it stays on the list indefinitely unless you decide to remove it or if the number is disconnected.
Telemarketers have 31 days after you register to stop calling your number.
However, some types of calls are exempt from this rule, including:
- Political calls
- Charitable solicitations
- Surveys
- Calls from companies you already have a relationship with
- Calls you’ve consented to receive in writing
If unwanted calls persist after 31 days, you can report them to the FTC.
The FTC takes these violations seriously and can impose hefty fines on companies that break the rules, helping to ensure your peace and privacy are respected.
What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls
If a company continues to call you despite being listed on the Indiana Do Not Call List and the National Do Not Call Registry, it’s more than likely a scam.
One of the most effective ways to shield yourself from these unwanted calls is to minimize your exposure by removing your phone number from online databases managed by data brokers.
These companies gather personal information from various sources, including public records and social media, and then compile this data into detailed profiles that they sell to anyone, including scammers and robocallers.
Here’s an example of what a data broker profile looks like:
Fortunately, most data brokers will remove your personal information if you request to “opt out” of their database.
We provide comprehensive, step-by-step guides on how to opt out of hundreds of data brokers.
Since these companies constantly update their databases, you’ll need to regularly check and remove any data that might have been republished to stay protected.
