What Is the Do Not Call List Massachusetts?
The Massachusetts Do Not Call Registry is a list on which Massachusetts residents can put their cell and home phone numbers to limit how many unwanted telemarketing texts and calls they get.
The state of Massachusetts Do Not Call List is maintained by First Data.
Signing up for the Massachusetts Do Not Call Registry is free. Numbers remain on the list permanently, i.e., there’s no need to re-register unless your number changes or you remove your number from the list.
The list is updated every three months (1st of January, 1st of April, 1st of July, and 1st of October). Telemarketers are prohibited from contacting the numbers on the state of Massachusetts Do Not Call List.
How quickly your number appears on the list depends on when you register. For example, if you register on the 5th of November, your number will be added to the list on the 1st of January.
Exceptions to the Do Not Call Registry Massachusetts include the following:
- Calls from companies you’re a customer with, e.g., your insurance company.
- Calls you’ve requested.
- Calls from companies whom you visited at their fixed commercial location.
- Noncommercial polls or survey calls.
- Calls from tax-exempt non-profit organizations.
- Calls made regarding an existing contract/debt.
The state of Massachusetts Do Not Call List is different from the national DNC List. For maximum protection, you should list your number on both lists.
Penalties under the Do Not Call List Massachusetts
If telemarketers continue calling you even after your number is listed on the Do Not Call Register Massachusetts, you can file a complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General, who can take legal action against companies that violate the Do Not Call Law.
You can also file a lawsuit and try to recover damages of up to $5,000 if you have received more than one unwanted telemarketing call in the last 12 months from the same entity/person.

How to Report Do Not Call List Violations In Massachusetts
If you receive unwanted calls after your number is published on the Massachusetts Do Not Call List, you can file a complaint online or write a demand letter.
What Is the National Do Not Call List?
You should also sign up for the national Do Not Call List if you haven’t already done so.
The national DNC List is similar to the Massachusetts Do Not Call List but is a national list managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
You can add your home and cell phone numbers to the national list, which will remain there permanently unless you remove your number from the list yourself or your number is disconnected.
Once your number is listed on the national DNC List, telemarketers are supposed to stop calling/texting you within 31 days. If they continue to contact you, you can file a complaint with the FTC, which might enforce penalties.
Like the Massachusetts Do Not Call List, the national DNC List also exempts some calls from having to follow the list.
These are:
- Political calls
- Charitable calls
- Survey calls
- Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
- Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.
What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls
Do Not Call Lists (state and/or national) can reduce the amount of unwanted telemarketing calls you receive, but it can’t prevent them 100%.
Scammers don’t care about lists like the Massachusetts Do Not Call List or the national DNC List. They’ll keep contacting you as long as they have your phone number.
The only way to stop these calls is to hide your contact details.
Most people’s phone numbers and other personal information is easily findable and accessible through sources like data brokers and people search sites, i.e., companies that collect your data from various sources and then publish it online.
Here’s a typical data broker profile:
You can remove your phone number and other details from these data broker sites by “opting out.”
See our opt-out guides for hundreds of data brokers that list your information.
Remember to check back regularly – data brokers will republish your information as soon as they come across more of it. Continuous opt-outs are essential to keep your personal details, including your phone numbers, hidden.
