We also show you how to register with the Do Not Call List New York.

The TL;DR Version: Do Not Call List New York

Here’s everything you need to know about the state of New York Do Not Call List (New York DNC List) at a glance.

  • What it is: New York Do Not Call Registry doesn’t exist because New York uses the national Do Not Call List. New Yorkers should list their cell and home phone numbers on the national DNC List.
  • How to sign up: Fill out an online registration form or call 1-888-382-1222.
  • How to unsubscribe: Call 1-888-382-1222 from the number registered on the National DNC List.
  • How to file a complaint: Fill out a complaint form
  • How to verify your registration: Use the ‘Verify a Registration’ form.
  • What to do if you’re still getting unwanted calls/texts: Opt out from data brokers and people search sites, a common source of your contact details. See our step-by-step opt-out guides or subscribe to a data broker removal service like DeleteMe.

What Is the Do Not Call List New York?

There’s no such thing as a New York Do Not Call Registry. Instead of maintaining a separate Do Not Call Register, New York has adopted the national Do Not Call List

Information about New York Do Not Call Law

New Yorkers who want to limit how many unwanted telemarketing calls and texts they get should list their cell phone and home phone numbers on the national DNC Registry. You can’t list business phone numbers on the national DNC List.

Within 31 days of getting your phone number on the list, telemarketers are expected to stop calling/texting you. However, there are some exceptions (see the section below).

Once your number is on the national DNC List, it’s there for good. Unless your number is disconnected or you remove it from the list yourself, you don’t need to worry about having to re-register.

Exceptions

The following calls are permitted, even if your number is on the national DNC List:

  • Political calls
  • Charitable calls
  • Survey calls
  • Debt collection calls
  • Informational calls
  • Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
  • Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.

New York Do Not Call List Registration

The Do Not Call New York List doesn’t exist. New York uses the national Do Not Call List as its own, so New Yorkers should register with that instead.

Take a look at our blog post on how to register with the national DNC list for more details.

What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls

Registering with the national DNC List will reduce the number of unsolicited calls you receive but won’t stop them completely.

Scammers don’t care about lists like the national DNC Registry. They’ll continue calling you regardless.

The best way to stop them is to make your contact details harder to find.

Typically, contact details like phone numbers are easily findable online through sources like people search sites and data brokers.

Data brokers and people search sites are companies that gather your personal details from sources like public records, combine them into profiles, and list these profiles on their websites.

Here’s what a typical data broker profile looks like:

If you’d rather your personal information, including your phone numbers, were not displayed on data broker sites, you can “opt out.”

Our opt-out guides show you how to do so for hundreds of different brokers.

You’ll need to opt out regularly, since data brokers relist your details when they come across more of your information, even if you opted out previously.
