What Is the Do Not Call List Tennessee?
The Tennessee Do Not Call/Text Program is a free program that allows residents of Tennessee to register their phone numbers to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls and texts they get.
It is managed by the Tennessee Public Utility Commission (TPUC).
Residents can register cell phone numbers used for non-commercial purposes. You cannot register business numbers with the Do Not Call Tennessee List.
Registration is permanent. Once your number is on the Do Not Call Registry Tennessee, it stays there unless you request its removal.
Telemarketers are prohibited from calling and/or texting numbers on the Do Not Call List Tennessee unless they have an established business relationship with you or meet other exceptions, e.g., they’re a non-profit organization or political candidate. Telemarketers can also call you with your permission or by invitation.
The occasional telemarketing call/text is also allowed as long as the telemarketer does not call and/or text you more than three times per calendar week and the call is not part of a telemarketing business plan.
Penalties under the Do Not Call List Tennessee
Consumers in Tennessee who experience violations of the Do Not Call List regulations have several forms of recourse available to them.
Consumers can file a formal complaint with the TPUC, which administers and enforces the Tennessee Do Not Call registry.
The complaint can be submitted online through the TPUC’s website. When filing a complaint, you’ll need to provide details such as the date and time of the call, the number that called you, and any information about the company.
The TPUC will investigate the complaint, and if the company is found to be in violation, they may impose penalties of up to $2,000 per illegal call. Each call is considered a separate violation, so companies could face substantial fines if they make multiple calls.

Managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the National Do Not Call Registry provides U.S. consumers a way to opt out of receiving most telemarketing calls.
Once registered, your phone number stays on the list permanently unless you choose to remove it or the number is disconnected. After 31 days on the list, telemarketers are legally obligated to stop calling you.
However, certain calls are exempt, such as:
- Political calls
- Charitable calls
- Survey calls
- Calls from businesses you already have a relationship with
- Calls you’ve given written consent to receive
If you still get unwanted calls after 31 days, you can file a complaint with the FTC, which might investigate violators and impose penalties on companies that break the rules.
