What Is the Virginia Do Not Call List?
You won’t find a Do Not Call Virginia List. That’s because rather than maintaining its own Do Not Call Register, Virginia uses the national Do Not Call List.
Residents of Virginia who want to limit how many unsolicited telemarketing calls they receive should list their home and cell phone numbers on the national DNC List. Business numbers can’t be added to the national DNC List.
Within 31 days of your number appearing on the national DNC List, telemarketers should stop calling and/or texting you (with a few exceptions, as outlined below).
Unless you remove your phone number from the list or your number is disconnected, you won’t need to re-register – your number will remain on the list indefinitely.
Exceptions
The following are exempt from obliging with the national Do Not Call List:
- Political calls
- Charitable calls
- Survey calls
- Debt collection calls
- Informational calls
- Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
- Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.
Virginia Do Not Call List Registration
There’s no such thing as a Do Not Call List Virginia.
Virginia uses the national Do Not Call List, so Virginia residents who want to get fewer unwanted calls should register with the national DNC List rather than look for a Do Not Call Registry Virginia.
Read our blog post on how to register with the national DNC List.
What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls
Registering with the national Do Not Call List won’t protect you from all unwanted calls. Because scammers don’t care about lists like the national DNC Registry, they will still call you.
To stop them, you must go further and hide your contact details.
Even if you don’t list your number on social media or elsewhere online, your number is still more than likely findable with a quick search on Google (or another search engine).
The reason why is data brokers.
Data brokers are companies that collect your personal information, including your phone numbers, from various sources like social media and public records, collate it into profiles, and display these profiles on their websites.
Here’s what a typical data broker profile looks like:
To stop your phone number and other personal details from being findable through these sites, you have to “opt out” of them.
Our opt-out guides show you how.
Note that opt outs need to be continuous. Data brokers republish your profile when they come across more of your personal information. Be sure to revisit these sites every few months to double-check that your name (and phone number) hasn’t reappeared.
