If you live in Maine and are getting a lot of unsolicited calls, you need to know: “What is the Do Not Call List Maine?”

Read on to learn about whether there’s a Do Not Call List in Maine and how to reduce the amount of unwanted calls and messages you receive as a resident of Maine.

We also show you how to register with the Do Not Call List Maine.

The TL;DR Version: Do Not Call List Maine

Here’s everything you need to know about the Maine Do Not Call Registry at a glance.

  • What it is: Maine has adopted the national Do Not Call List. Maine residents should, therefore, get their cell and home phone numbers listed on the national DNC Registry.
  • How to sign up: Fill out an online registration form or call 1-888-382-1222.
  • How to unsubscribe: Call 1-888-382-1222 from the number registered on the National DNC List.
  • How to file a complaint: Fill out a complaint form
  • How to verify your registration: Use the ‘Verify a Registration’ form.
  • What to do if you’re still getting unwanted calls/texts: Opt out of data brokers and people search sites that list your phone number and other personal information online. See our detailed, step-by-step opt-out guides or subscribe to a data broker removal service like DeleteMe.

What Is the Do Not Call List Maine?

The state of Maine Do Not Call List (Maine DNC List) doesn’t exist. Instead of maintaining a Do Not Call Registry, Maine has adopted the national Do Not Call List

Maine residents who want to reduce the number of unwanted texts and calls they receive should register their numbers on the national DNC Registry. Cell and home phone numbers are accepted; business phone numbers are not.

Once your number is on the list, telemarketers must stop calling/texting you within 31 days (with a few exceptions, which we list below).

Numbers stay on the national DNC List forever unless they are disconnected or you remove them.

Exceptions

The following calls are permitted, even if you’ve signed up for the national DNC List:

  • Political calls
  • Charitable calls
  • Survey calls
  • Debt collection calls
  • Informational calls
  • Calls from businesses you have an existing relationship with
  • Calls for which you’ve given prior written consent.

Maine Do Not Call List Registration

Because the Do Not Call List Maine doesn’t exist, you can’t list your number on the Do Not Call Register Maine.

Maine has officially adopted the national Do Not Call List, meaning Maine residents should sign up for that instead.

What to Do If You’re Still Getting Unsolicited Calls

As you might expect, registering for the national Do Not Call List does not stop all unwanted calls.

While legitimate telemarketers follow the national DNC List, scammers don’t.

The only way to prevent scammers from contacting you is to make your contact details harder to find.

Make sure your phone numbers are not displayed on online sources like social media profiles and personal websites.

Additionally, take the time to opt out of data brokers.

Data brokers and people search sites are companies that collect your personal data, including your phone numbers, from several sources, compile it into comprehensive profiles, and share these profiles on their sites for anyone to view for a small fee (or, in some cases, entirely free).

Here’s what a typical people search profile looks like:

Our opt-out guides explain how to opt out of hundreds of data brokers in operation today (each has a different process).

You’ll need to repeat the opt-out process for each broker in a few months’ time, as data brokers are known to relist individuals when they find more of their information online, even if they previously opted out.
