If you use or plan to use Unroll.me, you need to know: Is Unroll.me safe?
Below, we explain whether Unroll.me is:
- Safe to use.
- Good for privacy.
We also look at some steps you can take to improve both your safety and privacy when using this online service.
What Is Unroll.me?
Unroll.me is an email management service that lets you easily see subscription emails and makes it easy to unsubscribe from them.
The service scans your inbox for subscription emails, shows them in a list format, and gives you the option to unsubscribe, keep, or “roll up” emails.
The “roll-up” feature bundles selected emails into a daily/weekly/monthly digest, allowing you to reduce the number of individual emails you receive while still keeping certain subscriptions you want (but in a more manageable format).
Unroll.me supports Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and other popular email providers.
Is Unroll.me Safe?
Depends on your definition of “safe.”
According to Unroll.me, they’ve “established security protocols” for their services. As part of these protocols, they encrypt sensitive data, including any data that could identify you.
They also say they regularly monitor, scan, and test for vulnerabilities and provide only limited access to their databases (and that those with access complete continuous privacy and security training).
According to its Google Play page, the Unroll.me app encrypts data in transit. Users can also request that their data be deleted.
Unroll.me gets a 4.6 out of a 5.0-star rating (from 75,287 ratings) on Google Play and a 4.7 out of a 5.0-star rating (from 116.2k ratings) on the App Store.
No data breaches have been associated with Unroll.me at the time of writing.
Is Unroll.me Private?
Depends on your definition of “private,” but probably not.
In the past, an FTC settlement revealed that the company behind Unroll.me, Slice Technologies, collected data from users’ inboxes and sold anonymized information to third parties.
For example, the service analyzed users’ emails to track things like receipts and purchasing habits, which were then used to provide market research insights.
Unroll.me has since addressed these concerns and clarified its privacy policies.
On its website, Unroll.me says it is “not interested in your personal emails.” Its algorithms and processes focus on transactional and commercial emails.
In its privacy policy, Unroll.me outlines the type of information it collects and how it uses it.
Unroll.me collects:
- Identifier information (e.g., yourname, email address).
- Information about your subscriptions.
- Information about commercial transactions.
- Information about promotions received via email.
- Interaction data with website and apps (e.g., IP address, URLs of web pages visited, time spent on page, etc.).
Unroll.me collects this data for purposes including to manage your email subscriptions, maintain your account, communicate updates, and offer customer support.
It says it may disclose this information to its parent company and service providers, affiliated companies, and customers (including third parties and affiliates).
It may also disclose information to law enforcement authorities.
Unroll.me has not been reviewed by an external privacy review site such as Terms of Service; Didn’t Read at the time of writing.
How to Improve Your Safety and Privacy On Unroll.me
Follow the below steps for a safer and more private experience when using Unroll.me.
- Review Unroll.me’s privacy policy. Before using the service, read through Unroll.me’s privacy policy to understand how your data is collected, stored, and potentially shared.
- Limit access to your primary inbox. Consider using Unroll.me with a secondary email account instead of your primary one. This limits the amount of sensitive personal information Unroll.me has access to while still allowing you to manage less important subscriptions.
- Opt-out of data collection. Unroll.me offers an option to opt out of data collection for marketing or research purposes. To do this, go to Settings → Privacy Settings and adjust the permissions to minimize data sharing with third parties.
- Avoid enrolling sensitive emails. Do not use Unroll.me on email accounts containing sensitive or confidential information, such as work accounts or accounts linked to financial services.
- Regularly review connected accounts. Periodically check which email accounts are linked to Unroll.me and remove any that you no longer need to manage through the service. To disconnect an account, go to Settings → Accounts and remove it from the service.
- Unsubscribe manually where possible. For subscriptions that contain sensitive or personal information, consider manually unsubscribing directly from those emails rather than using Unroll.me. This keeps your inbox and subscription data private.
- Delete Unroll.me account if no longer needed. If you stop using Unroll.me, delete your account to remove any stored data. To delete your account, go to Settings → Delete My Account to ensure your email data is no longer stored by the service.
- Use email aliases or filters. Instead of relying solely on Unroll.me, consider using email filters or aliases within your email provider to automatically manage subscriptions. This reduces your reliance on third-party services and keeps your data within your own email system.
- Be cautious about what you “roll up.” The “roll-up” feature in Unroll.me groups emails into a daily digest. Be selective about which emails you roll up to avoid accidentally sharing more sensitive information through the service.
- Monitor your account activity. Regularly check your Unroll.me account for any unusual activity or changes to your settings.
