What Is Dingtone?

Dingtone is a mobile app through which you can make phone calls and send text messages to other Dingtone users. 

Dingtone calls are transmitted through VoIP. 

You can use Dingtone for free, but you need to earn credits by completing offers or watching commercial videos. Otherwise, you can buy credits for the Dingtone app. 

In addition to making calls and sending texts, Dingtone lets you share pictures, videos, and locations with contacts. You can also create group chats with up to 100 people and call any landline or phone number (i.e., not a Dingtone user) in 200+ countries with “super low rates.” 

With Dingtone, you can get a second phone number to receive calls and texts from anyone. In this way, you can keep your actual phone number private. 

The app is available for iPhone and Android devices. 

Is Dingtone Safe?

Depends on your definition of “safe.”

Dingtone is generally considered safe for making calls and sending texts, but because the app uses Voice over IP (VoIP) technology to route calls and messages over the internet, it relies on the security of your internet connection. As long as you’re using a trusted Wi-Fi or mobile network, the risk of interception is minimal. 

According to its Google Play page, Dingtone encrypts data in transit. Users can also request that their data be deleted. 

Most internet users seem to have had positive experiences with using Dingtone. 

Dingtone has a 4.2 out of 5.0-star rating (from 673,216 ratings) on the Google Play Store and a 4.6 out of 5.0-star rating (from 30.5k ratings) on the App Store. 

There have not been any data breaches associated with Dingtone as of the time of writing.

Is Dingtone Private?

Again, depends on your definition of “private.”

With Dingtone, you can get a second phone number, meaning you can keep your actual number private. This is great for separating work and personal communication or temporary purposes such as online transactions, dating apps, or dealing with strangers.

However, as outlined in its privacy policy, Dingtone collects a lot of personal information about users. 

This can include the following:

• Contact information: A simplified copy of your address book (names, phone numbers, ringtones, etc.). A cryptographic hash of this information for security.
• Personal information: Your mobile phone number, information provided when creating an account (e.g., your name and email address), demographic details (e.g.,  age, gender, and preferences), optional profile information (name, photo, etc.), and data imported from third-party accounts if you register using one.
• Location information: Your device’s location data, which is used for features like “Find Nearby Friends.” Your location may be stored on Dingtone servers and shared with other users if you use these features.
• Device information: Details about your device (e.g., device IDs, maker and model, operating system and version, browser type), technical data like IP address, MAC address, and mobile carrier information, and a list of specific mobile applications installed on your device.
• Usage information: Non-personally identifiable data about how you use the app, such as your device type, operating system version, IP address, and unique device identifiers (Android ID, MAC address, IDFA).
• Analytic information: Data collected through third-party analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics and AppsFlyer), information about web pages visited, app screens accessed, and overall usage trends.
• Cookies and tracking: Cookies and other tracking technologies are used to identify and track visitors to the Dingtone website.
• Cache: Multimedia content (such as pictures and videos) sent via the app is temporarily cached on Dingtone servers.
• Shared data: Any content you share through Dingtone (text, audio, photos, videos, and imported contacts).

Dingtone uses this data to inform you about product updates, announcements, and events and to improve and test its services. 

It also uses this data to personalize content (including online ads) and monitor usage metrics such as traffic and demographic patterns to enhance the overall user experience. 

The information collected helps diagnose and resolve technical issues, as well. 

Dingtone shares this data with its affiliates, third-party service providers, and advertising partners. They also work with third-party business partners who may use the information for their own services, including targeted ads and analytics.

It may share anonymized or aggregated data more broadly. Your information can also be disclosed to law enforcement or government agencies when legally required.

You can delete your Dingtone account, in which case all your associated data will be permanently removed. However, Dingtone says that certain information may be retained for legal, security, or technical reasons, and there might be a short delay before all your data is fully removed.

How to Improve Your Safety and Privacy On Dingtone

Follow the below steps for a safer and more private experience when using Dingtone. 

• Use a second phone number for privacy. Dingtone allows you to generate a second phone number, which helps keep your personal number private from unwanted contacts, spam, or telemarketers. To set this up, go to Dingtone > My Phone Numbers and choose a secondary number for your communications. Use this number for online transactions, apps, or temporary interactions to avoid exposing your primary number.
• Limit app permissions. Limit which permissions you give the Dingtone app to reduce the amount of personal data it can collect. You can do this via your phone’s settings. 
• Don’t use Dingtone for sensitive communication. Dingtone is not end-to-end encrypted. To keep your sensitive conversations private, use alternative platforms that do offer end-to-end encryption.
• Opt out of targeted ads and data sharing. Go to Dingtone’s settings > Privacy and look for options to opt out of targeted advertising or limit data collection. While this may not fully stop data sharing, it reduces the amount of personal data being used for ads.
• Use strong account security. Create a strong, unique password for your account, and don’t reuse it elsewhere. 
• Review and manage third-party integrations. Dingtone might integrate with other apps or services that could access your data. Regularly check and review any third-party integrations connected to your Dingtone account and revoke access to those that are no longer necessary or may over-collect data. You can manage these integrations in the Settings or Account section of the app.
