If you use or plan to use MX Player, you need to know: Is MX Player safe?
Below, we explain whether MX Player is:
- Safe to use.
- Good for privacy.
We also look at some steps you can take to improve both your safety and privacy when using this online service.
What Is MX Player?
Amazon MX Player (formerly MX Player) is an Indian video-on-demand and OTT streaming service owned by Amazon India.

It offers 150,000+ hours of content, including movies, web series, international dramas, TV shows, and short videos across various different genres and languages. It operates on an ad-supported model.
Its key features include offline viewing, watchlist, playback with intuitive gesture controls, background playback (e.g., listen to music while browsing), and subtitle controls (e.g., adjust placement, size, etc.).
Is MX Player Safe?
Depends on your definition of “safe,” but generally, it appears to be safe for most users, as long as you download it from an official source like Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
According to the MX Player Google Play page, the app encrypts data in transit, and users can request that their data be deleted.

MX Player gets a 4 out of 5.0-star rating (from 13m reviews and 1b+ downloads) on Google Play and a 4.6 out of 5.0-star rating (from 319.6k ratings) on the App Store.
No data breaches have been associated with the MX Player at the time of writing.
Is MX Player Private?
Again, depends on your definition of “private.”
MX Player’s approach to privacy is in line with many free, ad-supported apps, but users should be aware of the data it collects and how it’s used.
In its privacy policy, MX Player outlines the kind of personal information it collects (e.g., name, email address, phone number, date of birth, age, location, etc.) and why (primarily to facilitate and improve its services), as well as whom it may share it with (e.g., service providers, law enforcement, etc.)
According to its Google Play page, the MX Player app may collect personal information, location, financial information, app activity, device or other IDs, and app information and performance.

It says it does not share data with third parties.

MX Player’s privacy policy is flagged with a “Warning” by the Common Sense Privacy Program. This means MX Player “Does not meet our recommendations for privacy and security practices.”

The Program points out that it’s unclear whether MX Player sells or rents personal information to third parties and shares personal data for third-party marketing. It also says that personalized ads are displayed, third parties collect data for their own purposes, user information is used to track and target ads on other websites, and data profiles are created and used for personalized ads.
How to Improve Your Safety and Privacy On MX Player
Follow the steps below for a safer and more private experience while using MX Player.
- Download from official sources. Ensure you download MX Player only from trusted platforms (e.g., Google Play Store or Apple App Store). Avoid sideloading APK files from third-party sites, as they may contain malicious modifications that could compromise your privacy.
- Limit app permissions. Review and minimize the permissions granted to MX Player. For instance, only allow access to your device’s storage if you’re using local files, and avoid giving unnecessary permissions like location access or access to contacts. This helps reduce the data the app can collect.
- Use the ad-free version (MX Player Gold). Ads are a primary source of data collection in the free version. Upgrading to MX Player Gold (the premium version) removes ads, reducing the amount of tracking for targeted advertising purposes.
- Clear cache and data regularly. Periodically clear the app’s cache and data to remove any accumulated information about your usage. This can be done in your device’s settings under the app’s storage options.
- Use a VPN. A virtual private network (VPN) can mask your IP address and encrypt your internet traffic, making it harder for the app or third-party trackers to pinpoint your location and monitor your activity.
- Read the privacy policy. Make sure you understand the kind of information MX Player collects and what it does with it by reviewing its privacy policy periodically. Doing so will also help you stay aware of any changes in data collection practices and take appropriate action.
