If you use or plan to use Netflix Party (now Teleparty), you need to know: Is Netflix Party safe?

Below, we explain whether Teleparty is:

  • Safe to use.
  • Good for privacy.

We also look at some steps you can take to improve both your safety and privacy when using this extension.

What Is Netflix Party?

Netflix Party, now known as Teleparty, is a browser extension that lets people watch streaming content together online, even when they are physically in different locations.

The extension synchronizes video playback so everyone in the group watches the same scene simultaneously. It also has a group chat feature, where participants can talk about whatever they’re watching in real time.

To use Teleparty, you must have a subscription to the streaming service being used. The extension is also limited to web browsers; you can’t use it on mobile apps or smart TVs.

Initially designed for Netflix, Teleparty now supports other platforms like Disney+, Hulu, and HBO.

Is Netflix Party Safe?

Netflix Party (now Teleparty) is generally considered safe to use.

It’s available through the official Google and Apple app stores as a browser extension.

When installed, it requires access to read and change data on the websites you visit (like Netflix), which is typical for extensions that modify your viewing experience.

The chat feature within Teleparty is generally safe as long as you keep in mind that everyone in the party can see whatever you type into the chat.

The extension gets generally positive mentions on forums like Reddit.

Users should be wary of extensions masquerading as the official Netflix Party (now Teleparty).

In 2022, there were reports of several malicious Chrome extensions, including one titled “Netflix Party” and another titled “Netflix Party 2,” that tracked installers’ browser histories and injected JavaScript code into e-commerce sites they visited.

There have been no major data breaches associated with Teleparty at the time of writing.

Is Netflix Party Private?

Yes, Netflix Party (now Teleparty) is generally considered private.

According to its privacy policy, the extension collects minimal personal data, mainly to synchronize video playback and facilitate the chat feature.

The information collected is generally limited to what’s necessary to provide these services, such as details about the viewing session and participants’ interaction with the extension.

Teleparty does not require or have access to your streaming service login credentials.

Each participant joins the session using their own streaming account. This setup helps ensure that account information remains secure, as Teleparty only interacts with the video playback and chat features.

Teleparty’s privacy policy has not yet been reviewed by an external site such as Terms of Service; Didn’t Read.

How to Improve Your Safety and Privacy On Teleparty

Follow the steps below for a more private and secure experience while using Netflix Party (i.e., Teleparty):

  • Limit link sharing. Only share the Teleparty link with people you trust. Remember, anyone with the link can join your session, so avoid posting it in public forums or on social media where unintended participants might access it.
  • Use strong, unique passwords. Ensure that the streaming accounts you use with Teleparty have strong, unique passwords. This helps protect your accounts from unauthorized access, especially since Teleparty requires each participant to log in with their own streaming account.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive information in chat. Teleparty’s chat feature is visible to all session participants. Avoid sharing personal, sensitive, or private information in the chat, as everyone can see it in the group.
  • Manage browser permissions. Teleparty requires certain permissions to function, such as access to read and change data on the websites you visit. Review and manage these permissions in your browser’s settings to ensure you are comfortable with what’s being accessed.
  • Install from official sources. Only install Teleparty from the official Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons. This reduces the risk of downloading malicious versions of the extension that could compromise your privacy.
  • Consider a temporary email for sharing links. If you’re setting up a Teleparty for a larger group, consider using a temporary or disposable email address to send out invites. This can help protect your primary email address if the invite gets shared beyond your control.
  • Turn off tracking where possible. If you’re concerned about data collection for personalized ads, use your browser settings to limit tracking. On Chrome, enable “Do Not Track” in your browser settings or find similar options in other browsers to reduce the amount of data collected.
  • Use a VPN for additional privacy. Consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) while watching content via Teleparty. A VPN can mask your IP address and encrypt your internet connection, providing an extra layer of privacy and security.
  • Keep your extension and browser updated. Ensure that you are using the latest version of Teleparty and your browser. Updates often include security patches that help protect your privacy and enhance security.
  • Create separate profiles for privacy. Consider using a guest or separate browser profile specifically for Teleparty sessions. This can help keep your browsing history and other personal information separate from your streaming activities.
