If you use or plan to use Persona, you need to know: Is Persona safe?

Below, we explain whether Persona is:

  • Safe to use.
  • Good for privacy.

We also look at some steps you can take to improve both your safety and privacy when using this online service.

What Is Persona?

Persona is a mobile app that focuses on enhancing selfies and photos by applying various beauty filters and effects that can smooth skin, adjust facial features, and enhance overall appearance.

Users can apply effects and filters in real time while taking a photo or recording a video, allowing them to see how the final image will look before capturing it.

Beyond filters, the app includes editing tools that allow users to fine-tune aspects like brightness, contrast, saturation, and more. Features include options to reshape facial features, whiten teeth, enlarge eyes, and apply virtual makeup.

The app includes integration with social media platforms, allowing users to share their edited photos on sites like Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat.

Is Persona Safe?

Persona is generally considered safe to use, although there is minimal information about the app’s security or safety features on the Persona website

The app is not flagged as being malware (unlike some beautifying photo apps) and has been downloaded and rated many times in the App Store (where it currently has a 4.7 out of 5 rating from users) and Google Play (where it has a 4.2 out of 5 rating).

There are no data breaches associated with Persona at the time of writing.

Is Persona Private?

Depends on your definition of “private.”

Persona has some privacy features (including letting users manage permissions, request data removal, and opt out of targeted ads), but like most other apps, it also collects user data.

In its privacy policy, Persona says it may collect photos, videos, and usage data, including device information and online activity, purchase history, social media information, device data, and online activity data.

Photos and videos are encrypted and temporarily stored on secure cloud servers (Google Cloud and AWS) for 24-48 hours.

The app uses data for targeted ads.

Persona’s privacy policy has not been reviewed by external review sites such as Terms of Service; Didn’t Read at the time of writing.

How to Improve Your Safety and Privacy On Persona

Follow the steps below for a more private and secure experience while using Persona.

  • Review privacy settings. Go through Persona’s privacy settings and adjust them to limit who can see your profile, posts, and personal information.
  • Limit personal information. Avoid sharing sensitive details like your home address, phone number, or financial information.
  • Use strong passwords. Ensure your account password is strong and unique. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords securely.
  • Be cautious with links and attachments. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening attachments from unknown sources, as these could be phishing attempts.
  • Limit app permissions. Review and adjust the permissions you’ve granted to apps and services connected to your Persona account.
  • Be mindful of public posts. Be cautious about what you post publicly. Even if you think something is harmless, it could be used against you.
  • Log out from shared devices. Always log out of your Persona account on shared or public devices.
